How to learn Japanese quickly

Updated: Mar 22

Hello everyone! It's me Yuki sensei. Learning Japanese is no easy task, especially when learning it as a foreign language. However, the speed and efficiency of learning can vary greatly depending on "how you learn". In particular, by understanding what you like and your learning tendencies, and adopting a method that suits those, you can study comfortably and enjoyably. In this article, I'll introduce you to some methods for learning Japanese effectively, and the shortest route to learning Japanese!

1.Know your learning style

Everyone has a different learning style. First, find out what style you are good at learning.

Types of learning styles

Visual learner:

Good at learning by looking at images, diagrams, videos, etc.

Auditory learner:

Good at learning by listening to audio.

Reading/writing learner:

Good at learning by reading and writing texts.

Kinesthetic learner:

Good at learning by actually moving your hands or experiencing things.

For example, if you like watching movies and anime, you are likely to be a visual learner, if you often listen to podcasts and music, you are likely to be an auditory learner, and if you like writing in a diary, you are likely to be a kinesthetic learner.

2. Learning methods that utilize your interests

One of the reasons why people don't continue learning Japanese is that it's boring. However, by learning through things that interest you, you will naturally pick up Japanese while having fun.

For visual people

・Watch Japanese dramas and anime

・Watch with subtitles → Gradually reduce the number of subtitles

・Listen to lines repeatedly and imitate their pronunciation

・Take screenshots to record new words

・Read manga

・Start with books with furigana (phonetic reading)

・Enjoy the story and learn words naturally

For auditory types

・Choose books with scripts and check the parts you can't hear

・Listen to Japanese music and learn the lyrics

・Listen to songs while looking at the lyrics

・Memorize phrases from your favorite songs

・Try singing karaoke

For reading types

・Read blogs on topics you are interested in (e.g. travel, cooking, games)

・Beginners should start with children's books

・Write one sentence every day in Japanese

・Start with simple content such as "What did you do today?" and "How do you feel now?"

・Use a translation app to correct your writing

・Make Japanese friends and talk to them through chat or video calls

・Go out to places where you can use Japanese

・Go to Japanese restaurants and events

・Order from a Japanese menu

Actually speaking Japanese helps you remember it better

3. Create a study routine that suits you

It's important not only to adopt a learning method that interests you, but also to make it a habit. Here are some tips to keep up your pace of study.

Tips for making it a habit

・Continue every day, even if it's just for a short time

・Make time to be exposed to Japanese, even if it's just 10 minutes a day

・Incorporate it into your daily life, such as "watching Japanese videos while eating breakfast" or "listening to podcasts on your commute"

Set goals

・Set specific goals (e.g. "memorize 50 words in one month" or "watch anime without subtitles in three months")

・Reward yourself when you achieve them

・Record your progress

・Record your learning in a diary or app

・Write down what you have become able to do and feel your growth

4.Find a method that suits you

In order to learn Japanese efficiently, it is important not to assume that "this method is the best," but to try and find a learning method that suits you.

・If you are a visual learner, learn by using anime and dramas

・If you are an auditory learner, learn through music and podcasts

・If you are a reading learner, get into the habit of reading blogs and novels

・If you are an experiential learner, create a place to speak Japanese

Don't strive for perfection from the start, but incorporate methods that you find fun and naturally increase your opportunities to come into contact with Japanese.
